The ancient region of Kumano, the spiritual heart of Japan, is nestled in the green mountains of Wakayama Prefecture with breathtaking scenery, rural villages, and spectacular onsen.

Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 2004, the Kumano Kodo trail takes you back to an ancient Japan with deep religious traditions.

DAY 1: MOUNT KOYA

  • Departure from Osaka to Mount Koya.
  • Visit Okuno-In, an ancient Buddhist monastery with a vast cemetery that houses important people such as the samurai Toyotomi Hideyoshi and the tomb of Kobo Daishi. Meditation and Buddhist writing (Sutra) are some of the incredible experiences for you to try in this mystical place.

DAY 2: KAWAYU ONSEN

  • Transfer to KAWAYU ONSEN, a thermal geological wonder, where you may experience a hot spring bath on the Oto River.
  • At the river, dig a hole 30 cm deep with a shovel, wait for it to fill up with hot water, and you will get your own private “rotenburo” with clouds of steam on the green slopes of the mountains.
  • Departure for the region of Kumano Kodo and its ancient pilgrimage paths, the spiritual heart of Japan.
  • Accommodation in KAWAYU ONSEN, a geological thermal wonder on the Ota River, where you can experience a thermal bath in full contact with nature, with clouds of steam rising between the green slopes of the mountains.
  • Overnight in Kawayu Onsen.

DAY 3: KUMANO KODO NAKAHECHI

  • Departure towards KUMANO KODO NAKAHECHI, the Imperial Route of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage network that links the three Grand Shrines of Kumano.
  • Enjoy a beautiful walk on rocky paths through green mountains into the spiritual heart of Japan from Hosshinmon-oji gate to Fushiogami-oji, visiting Kumano Hongu Taisha, the main shrine of Kumano Sanzan.
  • Afterward, transfer to Katsuura Onsen, a harbor city with a picturesque landscape.
  • Overnight in Katsuura Onsen.

DAY 4: KUMANO NACHI TAISHA & CASCATA DI NACHI

  • Visit Nachi Falls (the highest in Japan) a mystical place where Buddhism and Shintoism coexist in harmony. Nearby, the Seiganto-Ji Buddhist Temple with its bright red three-story pagoda and the Shinto Kumano Nachi Taisha Grand Shrine.
  • Your journey on the ancient pilgrimage trails of Kumano Kodo will end after returning to Osaka.
